In addition, to open up the building windows and skylights were strategically cut into the thick street-front concrete walls and the roof, bringing light into classrooms and studios while making the program visible to the street. The intention was to create a unique system for light and environmental control while bringing in a filtered light that is critical for drawing and design studio instruction. The skylight system is constructed of three translucent ETFE films stretched on a custom-designed structural frame. These layers are inflated or deflated to adjust the amount of natural light and heat entering the building. The sculptural elements rest in the rooftop garden that is covered in native grasses and form the boundaries of what is now the campus quad. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting. The Potter Daniels Manor, the English Tudor Revival–style residence that hosted the 1975 and 1996 showcase houses, has been reimagined with 30 new interior and exterior spaces for the 2024 edition, which is now open until May 19. The gardens are designed with sustainability in mind, featuring fire-resistant planting to protect the estate while enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
Complementing the primary residence is a two-story gatehouse and a four-car carriage house with a chauffeur’s quarters. The estate’s flat, flower-filled grounds and meandering pathways lead to a rear terrace offering yet another vista of the Arroyo Seco. Over 25 local interior and landscape designers restored and reimagined the historic Tudor manor, crafting each room and garden space to revitalize and respect the home’s original architecture while infusing modern elements. The college logo is an orange circle, also known as the ArtCenter "Dot," which has been a part of the school's identity since its inception by founder Tink Adams[1] and a small number of colleagues. So far, the center has been in the works for six years, and it is currently employing a long-term land lease with the city on the site where it will be built, right where the current amphitheater is. The next six months will involve receiving feedback from city officials any other people or groups who could be impacted by the center.
